Don’t leave us in the dust!

HEY, FAM!
I know a lot of you are either at Burning Man, heading to Burning Man, or freaking out with your last minute preparations for Burning Man. I’m staying behind in Florida this year — the desert dust is a bit much for my Floridian sensibilities. But you have fun if you’re making the pilgrimage to Black Rock Desert this year.

Okie dokie artichokie, here’s what you’ll find in this newsletter.

  1. Open Positions
  2. New Logo Needed
  3. AfterBurn 2022 Updates

Open Positions

Want to be like me and discover just how amazing it is to volunteer for Burnt Oranges? If so, you’re in luck! We’re looking for two more fabulous creatures to join our team; current openings include the Event Coordinator and Volunteer Coordinator roles. These are valuable positions in our community which are more rewarding than you may anticipate. Click the above links to learn more about the roles and get in touch with us at if you want to join the team.

New Logo Needed

Consider this your official call-out for the AfterBurn 2022 logo. The theme (which I think is so cool) is Martian Disco. Send submissions to . The deadline is September 15, 2022, so get those ideas sizzling.

AfterBurn 2022 Updates

Event planning for AfterBurn 2022 is in full-swing! All vendors have been contacted and contracts are being secured. The budget is being finalized as well. Tickets, theme camp registration, and art grants (including Effigy and Temple applications) will open in September. Keep your eye on your inbox for more info next month!

Thanks for reading… and for making art, supporting art, and being a part of our community! Feel free to send me any updates.

Get those plans in order

HEY, FAM!
Here we are in the thick of summer, staying cool on these sweltering days. Penciling in a visit to a spring or planning to take a dip in the pool to cool off? Or maybe you’re preparing for That Thing in the Desert that’s coming up. Either way, I hope you’re doing something fun in the near future.

Okie dokie artichokie, here’s what you’ll find in this newsletter.

  1. Thank You, EPC!
  2. AfterBurn 2022 Dates
  3. AfterBurn 2022 Theme

Thank You, EPC!

I have a dispatch from the Burnt Oranges Board of Directors hot off the press!

The Board wishes to extend a huge thanks to the Event Planning Committee for their dedication during the 2 years that our burns were on hold. They did a great job keeping planning moving forward as well as hosting additional events in between. We are grateful for their planning of PreHeat 2022. While KC, Whitney, and Gabriel ‘Swami G’ are stepping down for a much overdue break, we are thrilled that they are staying on in other roles of leadership in the organization.

The Board is thrilled to have Amber ‘Stardust’ of the Event Planning Committee staying on as the new Event Planning Lead. She has already organized the tasks for AfterBurn 2022 and she is ready to kick-off planning. We are excited to continue supporting her in her continued leadership role.

The Board is also excited to welcome Tammy Amsler as our new Art Lead. Tammy has several years of leadership and team experience in addition to being a successful artist herself. While her initial focus will be on Event Art Grants, Effigy and Temple for AfterBurn 2022, she is already brainstorming how to help grow art in the organization. She is excited to join the organization and to get to know our artists, community and events.

AfterBurn 2022 Dates

AfterBurn 2022 will be held November 4 – 6, 2022 at Camp La Llanada, 2819 Tiger Lake Rd, Lake Wales, FL 33898. Planning has been kicked-off! See you on the playa!

AfterBurn 2022 Theme

The AfterBurn 2022 theme is… drumroll… extra suspense… Martian Disco! We can’t wait to see what you come up with.

Thanks for reading… and for making art, supporting art, and being a part of our community! Feel free to send me any updates.

Get those plans in order

HEY, FAM!
I hope you had a great time at PreHeat 2022! I sure did, spending my time gambling at that quirky casino, enjoying those delicious post-burn grilled cheese sammiches, swimming in the super refreshing swimming pool, and sleeping soundly in my cabin. Those were the icing on the cake, huh? Of course, my favorite events were the effigy and temple burns, as well as the Friday night parade.

Okie dokie artichokie, here’s what you’ll find in this newsletter.

  1. Post PreHeat 2022 survey
  2. AfterBurn 2022 Announcement

Post PreHeat 2022 Survey

While I had a blast at PreHeat and wish I was back at Camp La Llanada already, I still want to know what you thought of the event! That’s why we created this handy dandy Post PreHeat 2022 Survey. Feel free to let us know what we got right, what we can do better next time, and anything else we need to know. We’re a community, after all, so we need to hear from you!

AfterBurn 2022

Yes fam, there’s good news to be had: The Board has approved having AfterBurn 2022 and they are finalizing dates with the property. Rejoice! I’ll have more on that in the coming months.

  6. Theme Camp Registration
  7. COVID-19 Policy
  8. Art Grant Second Deadline Approaching

The Guides are HereAre you planning to play with fire at PreHeat 2022? The bust out your readers and take the time to thoroughly read the Burn Guide. Yes, there will be a quiz.

The 2022 PreHeat Survival Guide is also available, and is jam-packed with helpful deets.

Ticket DeadlinesTier Two tickets for PreHeat 2022 are still available. Get ’em while you still can at Ticket Tailor : https://www.tickettailor.com/events/burntorangesinc/609977#

The member reserved ticket deadline has passed, however, and all ticket sales (excluding vehicle and RV passes and ice pogs) close on Friday, 4/15 at 12PM. Word on the street is that this is for everybody, no exceptions: no ticket, no entry!

You can also find all the event details via our Facebook event: https://fb.me/e/2XvcZ58yq — and don’t forget the website: https://floridaafterburn.com/

Ticket Assistance Update

Ticket assistance is available if you are unable to afford a ticket. We will do our best to accommodate your request. Applications will be accepted until Monday, 4/11 and the final day to obtain tickets is Friday, 4/15 at 12PM. Please fill out the form under tickets on the homepage:  https://floridaafterburn.com/

Cabins are Sold Out

Cabins are all sold out, fam. We’re so happy this new program has generated so much interest! If you reserved one, remit payment by Friday, 4/15. Also, be sure to sign-up all participants staying in your cabin pre-event or at Greeters. No participants will be signed in to stay in a cabin if they are not on the list.

Volunteer Signup

You can still volunteer to sign up for a shift at PreHeat 2022. As you know, no burn can happen without volunteers, and we’re all about that. I myself am a volunteer, so be like Bob and sign up here: https://floridaafterburn.com/volunteering/

Leads are working hard and will be emailing everyone to confirm their shifts. You may also reach out anytime to the teams. Email addresses are on the website, too

Theme Camp RegistrationTheme Camp registration closes on Friday, 4/8. The website is being updated with this year’s placement map. Stand By.
Get your camp activities to me for the What, When, Where guide by Friday, 4/8. Email with the names of your camp builders for Thursday Worker Access Pass/Early Entry approval.

COVID-19 Policy

In order to burn safely, you will need either proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test taken within the last 48 hours to attend PreHeat 2022. Since there are indoor spaces at this event, we thought it to be the most responsible thing we can do. So in the spirit of radical self-reliance, make sure you have one or the other by the time you get to the gate. Read the full policy and any updates on the homepage: https://floridaafterburn.com/

Art Grant Second Deadline Approaching

The deadline to apply for an art grant is 4/8. Have a last minute project in mind? Funds are still available.
https://floridaafterburn.com/art/

Certified Lifeguards Still Needed

Certified lifeguards are needed to have the pool open at Camp La Llanada per our contract with the property, and trust us — you want it open. Two lifeguards are required at all times to open the pool. Unfortunately, the prior vendor has opted not to re-sign with our event due to the nature of it (mainly alcohol is available, and their lifeguards had to stay overnight due to drive distance/time to the property each day. The company felt there were too many liabilities). That’s where radical self-reliance comes in again fam, and we’re sensing a theme. Are you ready to bring your life-saving skills to the table?

The American Red Cross lifeguard certification (with First Aid/CPR/AED) is all that is required to meet the property’s certification requirements. Financial assistance may be available if you wish to be certified. If you are in the Tampa Bay Area, check out: https://parks.tampagov.net/web/wbwsc/webtrac.wsc/search.html?SessionID=si&module=AR&keyword=Lifeguard

If you are currently certified or wish to certify to volunteer, please email both Event Planning at as well as Volunteers at .

Remembering Peter Goetz

We are saddened by the passing of another phambly member, Peter Goetz. He was a longtime, cherished member of our phambly along with his wonderful wife, Sandra — and he was a fighter. In his own words: “And I’m not losing the fight. It will be a tie cause I’ll take the fucker with me.”  You never lost the fight, Peter and you indeed took the fucker with you. May you rest in power, and we hope you are enjoying all the kratom and catching all of the pokemon in the beyond.

Our love and comfort goes out to all who are feeling the loss of Peter. If you desire and are able to provide assistance to Sandra, a GoFundMe as been set up for her: https://gofund.me/5142bb0e

Additionally, effigy and temple submissions are also being accepted. We may be small but we are mighty, and we burn just as brightly as the big dogs. Won’t you be the next person to light our fire? Submit your ideas here:  https://floridaafterburn.com/burnable-art/

Oh yes, and art grant applications are live! That’s right, we have money and we want to give it to you to make art. What’s better than that? To apply, go to Burnt Oranges – Art Grants to submit your desire to participate: ttps://burntoranges.org/about-burnt-oranges/art-grants/

Volunteer Appreciation and Feedback Request

We’re in the process of establishing a Volunteer Resources Team to improve recruitment, training, retention, and separation. Our first focus will be to improve sign-up for event volunteer shifts, create better job descriptions for event volunteer positions, provide onsite help with any questions and/or concerns, and host training events to learn new positions that may be of interest. More information will be forthcoming.

In the meantime, we also want to let you know that you are appreciated! The Event Planning Committee is hosting a Volunteer Appreciation Lounge at PreHeat 2022 and they want to hear what would make you feel appreciated. The current plan is to host the lounge in the large dining room where there will be plenty of room to personally distance indoors, but due to COVID-19 the kitchen will be closed. Send us all of your burning desires. It could be iced lattes, a massage, a DJ, the possibilities are endless. To that end, don’t limit yourself, but also know not all suggestions may be feasible nor implemented. Please send your wishes, ideas, thoughts, etc. to

August 9, 2021

We’re finding joy even when things are sticky.

HEY, FAM!

We’re deep in the dog days of summer, and it seems like the world is super heavy right now. If you’re like us, it can be pretty tough to turn on the news, so make sure you’re taking good care of yourselves.

We were feeling pretty excited about the state of the world for a while, but as we all know, the only constant is change. Here’s hoping for brighter tomorrows as we navigate a rather sticky today.

Okay, let’s get down to business. I have some important updates for the Burnt Oranges community.

In this issue:

  1. AfterBurn 2021 postponed to PreHeat 2022
  2. Remembering Austin Miles
  3. Remembering Richard Lemanski
  4. But there’s good news coming!

AfterBurn 2021 postponed to PreHeat 2022

As you may have learned, Burnt Oranges is offering a new membership system with burner Unfortunately, the Board of Directors made the collective (and we think smart) decision to cancel AfterBurn 2021. They don’t feel confident enough about holding AfterBurn safely and selling enough tickets in order to pay for the event. We will miss seeing your shining faces at Camp La Llanada this year.

Remembering Austin Miles

Many of you know Austin Miles and his wonderful family who have been part of our Burn community for seven years. Austin was recently hospitalized with complications of COVID-19 and sadly passed away August 4th. He will be missed immensely by his family and by all who knew him. There is a fundraiser organized by Julie Mills for him if you’d like to donate:

Remembering Richard Lemanski

We were also saddened to hear of the passing of Richard Lemanski. Without his willingness to take a chance on hosting us, the Florida burn scene might not be what it is today. At Maddox Ranch, we found a place to call home and grow. Many of us first met each other there and will always have a love for it. For those of us who got to know Richard and Lynne, the generosity and true sense of phambly we received from them was a blessing. We will miss him always.

But There’s Good News Coming!

The new Art Committee would like feedback from past art grant recipients. Kindly fill out We’re turning our sights to PreHeat 2022! All of the Event Planning Committee’s efforts will transfer to PreHeat and we’re hoping that even more of you will volunteer to make this event happen. Keep your eyes on your inbox as I will update you next week with PreHeat deets!
