Whether this is a holiday of quiet reflection on the beyond or a fun day to dress up the kiddos and take them out for trick-or-treating, we hope it’s one for the history books. AfterBurn 2022 What Where When Guide

Thank you all for your submissions to the What Where When guide, which you can access here. There are tons of fun events, and we’re even more stocked about AfterBurn 2022 now.

Martian Disco Skate Party
Jupiter’s Arcade is calling all citizens of Afterburn to help with the Laser Abduction happening in the Mall over the weekend! Martians will be launching an assault of lasers, lights, fog, and disco music to hypnotize us beautiful burners. If you have any lasers of your own, please bring them to set up on the other side of the Mall, and show those Martians on stage we are strong and have lots of pretty lights too.

Martians can more easily read our minds and track our movements when we move slow and orderly. So for Friday night (and maybe Saturday night too), Jupiter’s Arcade is asking all participants to join together for a Martian Disco Skate Dance Party! Bring your dancing feet, roller skates, roller blades, skateboards, hoverboards, scooters, bikes, and anything else with wheels to keep us all moving around in an ordered chaos. We only ask that you sign a liability waiver list in case those Space Invaders cause you damage.

Less than three weeks but who’s counting?

Volume 5, Number 7
October 19, 2022

HEY, FAM!
We love this time of year, when the regional burn we know and love is on the horizon. It’s the same way we felt about summer camp when we were kids, when we got the chance to be away from home in nature with a bunch of our friends.

Camp La Llanada is a special place that invokes that nostalgia, or that allows you to experience it for yourself if that wasn’t a part of your childhood. In any case, your MO at AfterBurn 2022 is to have fun and rediscover what play means to you as a grown-up. With Martians. At a disco.

Less than a month to go!

HEY, FAM!
We have less than a month until I get to see all of your beautiful faces at Camp La Llanada. Yes, the property survived Hurricane Ian, and we’re super grateful for that. Given what some people have dealt with, we’re just going to soak in that blessing and we hope you are too.

As for those of you who are still finding yourself sleeping for 12-hour stretches or nodding out on the couch watching Netflix, we get it. All of this will make AfterBurn 2022 feel like a bold celebration honoring our collective humanity.

Okie dokie artichokie, here’s what you’ll find in this newsletter.

  1. Logo Update
  2. Cabin Update
  3. Ticket Assistance
  4. Theme Camp Registration
  5. Art Grant Information
  6. Effigy and Temple Submissions
  7. DMV Deets
  8. What, Where, When Submissions
  9. Volunteer Shifts
  10. A Word On Bugs

Logo Update

A big thank you to everyone who submitted artwork for the AfterBurn 2022 logo. We have chosen Meghan Lucas-Maguire’s submission as the official logo for this burn. Check out this beauty!

We’re here for this Martian disco!

Cabin Update

Wow, y’all love this cabin perk, huh? It really makes a difference having a cool place to rest with running water and plumbing, which is likely why this option has been so popular. At this time, cabins B and C for theme camps are still available. We are also taking waitlist submissions.

Cabin orders must be completed by Friday, October 21st at 11:55pm.

Ticket Assistance

We get it. Some bosses just don’t pay you enough, or maybe you can’t work because of a personal reason. That’s why we are proud to offer ticket assistance for our participants. Submit your application here by October 21st by 11:55 PM.

Speaking of tickets, the member ticket deadline was October 10, 2022. If you did not get your member ticket by the deadline, please reach out to  ASAP so that we can provide assistance. Unsold member tickets will be rolled to Tier 2 tickets when that tier opens up. Tier 1 closes on October 17, 2022 at 11:55 PM, and tier 2 will open on October 18, 2022 at 6:00 PM.

Theme Camp Registration

Theme camp registration for Afterburn 2022 closes soon, so sign up here ASAP. Your last chance to register or make adjustments is Sunday, October 16th — and the last, last chance to tinker further is Friday, October 21st.

Art Grant Information

Art grant applications — for both art and burnable art — are still open! These will be accepted up to Friday, October 14th at 11:55pm, so apply here. Also, I don’t care how silly you think your idea is. The theme is Martian Disco, people! Bring us your wildest and most colorful submissions.

Effigy and Temple Submissions

The effigy and temple burns are the beating heart of any burn, giving us the big, bright, burning finale of an event — during which we’re more vulnerable and authentic than anywhere or anytime else. These fires remind us of that fundamental spirit that lives inside of us, and allow us to commune in solidarity with our fellow beautiful weirdos.

That said, we know it’s a big job — which is why we need YOU to step up and manifest that vision! Volunteer resources will help recruit a build team if that is a concern. Seriously. Apply here.

DMV Deets

Are you bringing a badass mutant vehicle to AfterBurn 2022? We hope so! Just remember that only approved art cars and golf carts (make ’em cute, y’all) are allowed on property. ATVs, quads, yo mama’s hooptie, etc. are not allowed. And yes, golf carts for personal use should be decorated. Reach out to  if you have any questions.

What, Where, When Submissions

Are you hosting an event at your theme camp at AfterBurn 2022? Maybe you are having a Martian movie marathon and serving snacks from another planet. Or maybe you are putting together a black light roller disco replete with mirror balls and ’70s funk. Whatever it is, I want to know about it! Email me for inclusion at

Volunteer Shifts

Want to be as good-looking and charismatic as me? I am so glad you asked. Volunteer shifts are still available for signup on our website. So don’t be a sparkle pony, ya hear? Email  for more information.

A Word on Bugs

News flash: We live in Florida, and Florida has bugs. To that end, we do not expect a bug apocalypse for the weekend — our research indicates they are less likely to be swarming in November, so rejoice!  Still, our incredibly capable and savvy placement team is creating alternative options to be prepared for Florida’s mercurial nature.

Cabins, cabins, cabins!

HEY, FAM!
Thanks again for bearing with us and being patient as we continue to get the DEETS in order. One of our core volunteers was busy time traveling, so that should explain all of the glitches in the matrix you’ve been experiencing. Fortunately they are back in this dimension and we haven’t been consumed by the butterfly effect… yet.

Okie dokie artichokie, here’s what you’ll find in this newsletter.

  1. Cabins, cabins, cabins!

Cabins, cabins, cabins!

As you shake the dust off of your tent, your clothes and… well, pretty much everything else, you should know that we here at Burnt Oranges have a real luxury provided to us for Afterburn 2022: cabins! Folks who took advantage of this luxe option at PreHeat 2022 will tell you that they’re awesome. To that end:Applications are now open! You may apply for a cabin here, starting at 6pm tonight. The last day to apply for a cabin is Sunday, October 16, 2022.

Applications are first-come, first-serve, and will be processed in order of receipt. Also, an application is not a guarantee of reservation. If your request is approved, you will be assigned a cabin and will receive a PayPal invoice from  for the required deposit. Cabin deposits ($100) are due within 48 hours of invoicing. Applicants who fail to pay the deposit by their deadline may lose their reservation. Once your deposit is received, watch for an email from Ticket Tailor with your cabin ticket.

The last day to remit full payment for your cabin is Friday, October 21, 2022. Those who fail to pay for their cabin by this date may lose their reservation but will forfeit the deposit — so please plan accordingly. Applications will be reviewed beginning October 1. We will contact you directly if we have questions.

Don’t leave us in the dust!

HEY, FAM!
I know a lot of you are either at Burning Man, heading to Burning Man, or freaking out with your last minute preparations for Burning Man. I’m staying behind in Florida this year — the desert dust is a bit much for my Floridian sensibilities. But you have fun if you’re making the pilgrimage to Black Rock Desert this year.

Get those plans in order

HEY, FAM!
Here we are in the thick of summer, staying cool on these sweltering days. Penciling in a visit to a spring or planning to take a dip in the pool to cool off? Or maybe you’re preparing for That Thing in the Desert that’s coming up. Either way, I hope you’re doing something fun in the near future.

Okie dokie artichokie, here’s what you’ll find in this newsletter.

  1. Thank You, EPC!
  2. AfterBurn 2022 Dates
  3. AfterBurn 2022 Theme

Thank You, EPC!

I have a dispatch from the Burnt Oranges Board of Directors hot off the press!

The Board wishes to extend a huge thanks to the Event Planning Committee for their dedication during the 2 years that our burns were on hold. They did a great job keeping planning moving forward as well as hosting additional events in between. We are grateful for their planning of PreHeat 2022. While KC, Whitney, and Gabriel ‘Swami G’ are stepping down for a much overdue break, we are thrilled that they are staying on in other roles of leadership in the organization.

The Board is thrilled to have Amber ‘Stardust’ of the Event Planning Committee staying on as the new Event Planning Lead. She has already organized the tasks for AfterBurn 2022 and she is ready to kick-off planning. We are excited to continue supporting her in her continued leadership role.

The Board is also excited to welcome Tammy Amsler as our new Art Lead. Tammy has several years of leadership and team experience in addition to being a successful artist herself. While her initial focus will be on Event Art Grants, Effigy and Temple for AfterBurn 2022, she is already brainstorming how to help grow art in the organization. She is excited to join the organization and to get to know our artists, community and events.

AfterBurn 2022 Dates

AfterBurn 2022 will be held November 4 – 6, 2022 at Camp La Llanada, 2819 Tiger Lake Rd, Lake Wales, FL 33898. Planning has been kicked-off! See you on the playa!

AfterBurn 2022 Theme

The AfterBurn 2022 theme is… drumroll… extra suspense… Martian Disco! We can’t wait to see what you come up with.
